Against the plain – Pt. 3

Happy Hump Day! (aka Wednesday)
This is my ideal comfy yet put together outfit for school.
I’ve seen others pair the same colour on the top and bottom recently and it always catches my eye so I thought I’d give it a go!
I threw on a blanket scarf for extra warmth and comfort. If you don’t already have one, I’d strongly recommend investing in a giant scarf because they are a life saver when it’s chilly in class and is used as my shield against the cold wintery months when walking outside on campus.

I look like a burrito of oatmeal and I’m ok with that. (mmm oatmeal)

Pairing the old with the new

A common quote I live by is “you can never go wrong with an all black outfit”. You’re guaranteed that all the items will go together, and you can have fun with textures and shapes; as I’ve stated in a different post previously. A piece I particularly like in this outfit are the ripped black jeans. I bought those bad boys in Time Square (NYC) during my “emo days” (circa 2009-2010) as some would call it, and never wore them until very recently. A perk of staying the same height/weight since grade 9 is that you have double the wardrobe compared to others who grew to be 6ftsomething. Ripped jeans are very “on trend” as of late, yet I didn’t have to spend a penny on these, just had to dig through my closet!

Shout outs to Felix Desroches for the photography and editing of these photos.

Against the plain – Pt. 2

I’d like to start by saying happy Friday! I hope you all have a  wonderful weekend.
This look is all about the skirt. I’ve been wanting a button-up jean skirt for a while now and the ones at American apparel just didn’t seem to fit right. As I was waltzing through the mall after a long day of class, Zara’s sale caught my attention and I simply had to sneak a peak. Low and behold they had a denim skirt… and the best part.. it was on sale for 15$! If that’s not a bargain I don’t know what is.
To really let the skirt be the statement I went for opaque tights and a black turtle neck.

Teaspoon of Thoughts -Keeping your circle of friends small

A lot of people I have been speaking to recently have been telling me that they wish they could meet new people and have more friends. So this lead me to think about society these days. It’s no secret that many artists influence the society we live in, furthermore, we tend to subconsciously conform to the norms of society. A term I’ve seen a lot in the recent months-years has been the “no new friends” slogan or “keep my circle tight” etc etc. Of course it is necessary to have your go-to friends whom you can confine to but you don’t have to limit yourself to just socializing with the same couple of people all the time. Humans seem to be having more and more trust issues caused by disappointment from their peers, so they try to limit their friends to have less disappointment, makes sense? Wrong. The issue with this is even the closest people to you, the people you thought would be there forever, sometimes are not, and sometimes let you down. And then what? You’re left with next to no people around you.
Humans are relational beings and we must rely on others to function properly and happily. We crave interaction in many ways. Ignoring this will simply lead to a loneliness issue, which can spiral to depression, etc. It’s also no secret that we’ve begun to fill the void of loneliness by actively being on social media and our phones. This clearly can’t be good for our physical and mental health, as well as our real life social interactions.
Additionally, having the same small group of friends can be nice, but also may be limiting to your personal growth. You almost begin to blend into one personality, one opinion, one being. Also I’d like to mention again the conformity theory, (google asch experiment if you want to learn more) people want to feel accepted so they will shape their opinions and thoughts to please the individuals that surround them.
Having many different friends in diverse groups allows you to explore the different and unique sides to your personality. It enables you to learn and discover new things and opinions you didn’t know you had.
Having graduated almost four years ago I am feeling now more than ever that I need to widen my group of friends as some of my dearest and closest ones have moved out of town (miss you babes).

SO on to a more positive note; here are three ways I thought of meeting new people and (hopefully) making new friends:
1. join clubs or groups
2. ask a work friend out for a drink (or a tea)
3.social media (as silly as this sounds, I’ve made friends through mutual follows when I decided to get out of my comfort zone and send them a message to hang out in person)

If you’re still here, thanks for enduring my little rant of thoughts. Of course I have generalized my arguments and I know some are very lucky to already have those “day one” friends as well as many other good acquaintances. (I’m also aware that some are perfectly happy with their 1-3 friends and that’s cool too, do you, boo). These are my personal thoughts and feelings, so my hopes for the new year would be to meet new, inspiring, and positive individuals.

Until next time,
Stay kind.

It’s cold outside

Although our winter was quite delayed, the Canadian weather has hit us full force in January. It’s not easy to portray your style and look nice while still keeping warm. I, for one, choose comfort and warmth over fashion during the cold winter months. However I got the chance to style and “model” a look for a fantastic local boutique and I love how it turned out. On top of that…I was quite toasty! I would probably throw on a chunky knit scarf and layers under the jacket for added warmth if I was wearing this for a longer period of time though. All black is a go-to for anyone, furthermore mixing textures adds fun and interest.

Shout outs to my dear friend Sonya who shot this look.

Against the plain – Pt. 1

Hello….

…it’s me…Emily! It’s 2016, and although I don’t believe in new year’s resolutions; as I’m a firm advocate for people to change whenever it’s needed… I figured I’d make a change in this new year and finally start my very own blog. I use the word style instead of fashion because it seems more laid back, plus I will admit that I don’t follow the latest trends and looks on the runways. My style varies through my mood, my surroundings, and my experiences. I do not force myself to follow one look because to me, that’s too boring. Life changes and molds you, so why not have your clothing do the same. Goodbye minimalism, hello fun and freedom!
For my first look I figured I’d do a very typical “Emily” easy look.
A band tshirt, some jeans, and a faux-leather jacket is something I’d throw on any day and feel comfortable and confident.
